Diatomaceous Earth has been used as an insecticide for centuries. It kills and repels insects by dehydrating them, rather than chemically poisoning them (and ultimately, you).

From earliest times, man used ashes, sand, or dust to cover his stored crops to prevent insects from destroying them. Some Native Americans covered their corn in mounds of sand.

Mammals and birds take dust baths to rid themselves of external parasites, too.

When employed as an insecticide, Diatomaceous Earth works by killing via mechanical means rather that by chemical poisoning. Diatomaceous Earth kills by Desiccation (Dehydration). Diatomaceous Earth absorbs the waxy epicutical surface area of the insect. This retrieval of the protective watertight layer allows the absorption of the internal lipids. The insect can no longer retain the essential fluids in its body and the insect dies of Dehydration. Because the process is mechanical, not chemical, insects have not become immune to Diatomaceous Earth as they have to chemical insecticides.
